Meet the Maven: Myleik Teele Founder & President of curlBOX

PR Maven and Founder/President of curlBOX, Myleik Teele, came up with such an ingenious idea that I had to reach out to find out more about the woman and the brand! In case you haven’t heard, curlBOX is a highly coveted hair product sampling program for naturals. For a nominal monthly fee of $20 women can try high quality samples (and sometimes even full sizes) specifically formulated for natural curls, kinks and coils. Pretty cool, right?

In a brief Q&A with Mavens & Muses, Myleik reveals the inspiration behind curlBOX, her favorite hair care products and an interesting take on natural hair as a “trend” (or not).

What was the inspiration behind the launch of curlBOX?

I had seen many sampling companies pretty much offering the same thing … makeup.  While I love makeup (I actually worked at the Clinique, Lancome and MAC Cosmetic counters while in college), I felt like a sampling program for women with naturally curly hair would be MOST appreciated.  Turns out, I was spot on.

Did you anticipate how wildly popular this concept would be? When did you know that you had a winning product on your hands?

I always had the feeling that if I thought it was a really great idea that someone else would think it was cool too but I had NO idea that it would be as popular as it has become and so fast.  We sell out 100+ memberships in MINUTES … That still blows my mind.  I knew that I had a winning idea and product when I called up my business advisor and designers and all people involved and he agreed to take me on for nothing up front. They saw my vision and where I was planning on going with the brand and they were all on board.  All have since been compensated. :)

You’ve been natural for over 10 years, have you fine tuned your hair care regimen? If so, how?

I’m STILL working on my regimen (believe it or not).  Ha!  I moved to Atlanta three years ago and experienced “seasons” for the first time (I was born and raised in LA) and one thing that works in my hair in the winter does NOT work in the summer or as my hair grows, certain products don’t work.  I really just try to listen to my hair. I can pretty much feel and tell what it needs.  I know when I need to do a pre-poo for extra moisture and I know when it’s time for me make some time to SIT under my Huetiful steamer.  One product that I can ALWAYS count on is Elasta QP Mango Butter.  It’s just like a good girlfriend for me … Always works.

How do you feel about fashion outlets like Vogue Italia spotlighting natural hair as a “trend”?

I’ve noticed that people have been spotting natural hair as a “trend” for a few years now.  Funny enough, I’ve always felt like relaxers were a trend.  If you look back 20ish years, people were wearing their hair this way as the ONLY way to wear your hair.  So I never really look at it as a “trend” per say and more of a movement of people stepping AWAY from a trend.

What’s next for the curlBOX brand?

I have some really awesome ideas for curlBOX.  We’re going to have some really fun and mind-blowing collaborations.  I love giving gifts and I love to surprise people and curlBOX allows me to treat and surprise hundreds of subscribers each month.  I love seeing the smiles and watching the eyes of surprise when the boxes are received.  So we’re going to just keep going with the innovative ideas and fun in each box.

Care of the hair and care of the scalp skin may appear separate, but are actually intertwined because hair grows from beneath the skin. The living parts of hair (hair follicle, hair root, root sheath, and sebaceous gland) are beneath the skin, while the actual hair shaft which emerges (the cuticle which covers the cortex and medulla) has no living processes. Damage or changes made to the visible hair shaft cannot be repaired by a biological process, though much can be done to manage hair and ensure that the cuticle remains intact..`
